The development of the silicone industry over recent decades tells a story of transformation—from technological dependence to self-reliance. In earlier years, core technologies were monopolized by a few developed nations. Chinese manufacturers not only paid high prices for monomers but also faced strict technical blockades. Domestic production was mostly limited to low- and mid-end products, while high-end sealants and electronic-grade silicones relied heavily on imports, leaving profit margins squeezed.
The turning point came after 2000, when Chinese companies increased R&D investment and broke through key processes such as methyl chlorosilane monomer synthesis—ending foreign monopolies. Over the past decade, with the rise of new industries like NEVs and semiconductors, domestic silicone firms have rapidly upgraded from industrial-grade to high-purity and specialty-functional products. Today, China accounts for over 60% of global silicone monomer capacity, meeting domestic demand and exporting to Europe, the U.S., and Southeast Asia. In PV sealants and NEV thermal materials, Chinese silicone now leads globally—completing its leap from “follower” to “pioneer.”
