According to some chemistry books, "silicone" should be a condensate of silica, with a molecular formula of mSiO2 • H2O. This "silicone" is a highly active adsorption material, belonging to amorphous substances, insoluble in water and any solvent, non-toxic and odorless, chemically stable, and does not react with any substances except strong bases and hydrofluoric acid. And what we often refer to as nose augmentation, the silicone filled in breast augmentation is this type of silicone.
However, in the mold industry, the term "silicone" we refer to is usually not the silica gel hydrate mentioned above. The silicone in the mold industry is usually referred to as a type of polysiloxane. Simply put, the silicone in the mold industry is a synthetic rubber called silicone rubber because it contains silicon atoms, hence it is abbreviated as "silicone".
The mold industry has a wide variety of types and uses of silicone. As for product performance, there are significant differences based on the different raw materials, but overall, this type of "silicone" (specifically silicone rubber) is showing a trend of replacing rubber in the future.
Many times, when we mention "silicone", it does not simply refer to the condensation of silica, nor does it refer to the silicified synthetic rubber in the mold industry. Instead, we call both types of products "silicone". At this point, we further divide "silicone" into organic silicone and inorganic silicone. Inorganic silicone is the first type of "silicone" we mentioned - the hydrate of silica.
Silicone containing synthetic rubber in the mold industry is called organic silicone because it contains hydrocarbon groups. When it comes to "silicone rubber" in some places, it is defined as "between organic and inorganic substances", but more manufacturers of silicone rubber still claim to be producing organic silicon.
From the above three situations, the concept of "silicone" is very confusing, but unfortunately, there is currently no clear national definition for its name.
When we hear the word "silicone", we must understand whether it is silica or synthetic rubber containing silicon, or ultimately whether it is inorganic silicone or organic silicone.
It is necessary to mention a few words related to the term "silicone" at this point: silicone rubber, silicone rubber, and silicone.
The relationship between silicone rubber and silicone has already been mentioned above. The difference between silicone rubber and silicone rubber includes silicone rubber, which is the organic "silicone" within "silicone". "Silicone" is a term used in Hong Kong and Taiwan, and in mainland China it is called "silicone". Therefore, according to the chaotic term "silicone" in mainland China, silicone is also a confused term. Silikon is a transliteration of silicone, and we usually refer to it as "silicone".
