In the field of silicone rubber manufacturing, the selection of a curing agent is a critical decision that determines the final product’s performance, safety, and production efficiency. Currently, the industry primarily employs two processes: peroxide curing and platinum-catalyzed addition curing. To address the differences between these two technologies, Anhui Aiyota Silicone Oil Co., Ltd. has conducted a comprehensive analysis of their advantages and disadvantages, combining cutting-edge industry technology with practical application needs, to provide a scientific reference for downstream enterprises in material selection.

Peroxide-Cured Silicone Rubber: A Mature Process with Cost Advantages

Peroxide curing is a well-established and widely used traditional process. Its core mechanism involves the decomposition of organic peroxides at high temperatures to generate free radicals, which then abstract hydrogen atoms from the silicone rubber chains to initiate a cross-linking reaction.

The main advantages of this process include high cost-effectiveness and simple formulations. Furthermore, the cross-linked network structure of the vulcanized rubber consists of C–C bonds with high bond energy, providing excellent resistance to thermal and oxidative aging as well as low compression set, making it highly suitable for static sealing applications or high-temperature industrial environments.

However, the disadvantages of peroxide vulcanization are also quite evident. First, this process generates volatile byproducts such as acetophenone during vulcanization, which can cause the product to have an unpleasant odor and may affect the long-term stability and transparency of the silicone rubber. Second, acidic decomposition products may negatively impact the heat resistance of sealed products and may even cause corrosion to equipment. Furthermore, its mechanical properties (such as tear strength) are relatively low, and it is difficult to control consistency between batches.

Platinum-Cured Silicone Rubber: High Purity and Exceptional Performance

Unlike peroxide curing, platinum-curing uses platinum complexes as catalysts to facilitate an addition reaction between silane groups and vinyl groups.

The core advantage of this process lies in its extremely high purity and safety. The addition curing process is exceptionally clean, producing virtually no volatile byproducts. As a result, platinum-cured silicone rubber is naturally odorless and tasteless, featuring extremely high transparency, excellent resistance to yellowing, and outstanding biocompatibility—perfectly meeting the standards of demanding applications such as medical implants, baby products, and food-contact materials. At the same time, it offers exceptional consistency in performance across batches and enables rapid curing at lower temperatures, thereby improving processing efficiency.

The main limitations of platinum addition vulcanization include the relatively high initial material cost and strict requirements for processing environment cleanliness; certain contaminants (such as sulfides or amine compounds) may cause catalyst poisoning and hinder the vulcanization reaction.

IOTA High-Purity Platinum Catalyst Solutions

In response to the extremely high catalyst purity requirements of platinum-addition vulcanization, Anhui IOTA Silicone Oil Co., Ltd. has launched the IOTA 81 and IOTA 82 series of high-purity platinum catalysts. These products utilize high-purity diethylene tetramethyl disiloxane platinum complexes, with strict control over heavy metal impurities such as lead, cadmium, and mercury, offering core advantages including high catalytic efficiency and strong batch-to-batch consistency.

The IOTA series of platinum catalysts from Aiyota is not only perfectly suited for fields with extremely high safety requirements—such as medical-grade silicone rubber, high-end cosmetics, and precision electronic packaging—but also effectively prevents the issue of impurity residue common in traditional processes.
