Dow Corning 704 and 705 have been used in vacuum systems for decades, but rising prices and longer lead times have encouraged users to look for alternatives. IOTA 704/705 have the same CAS numbers and similar TDS values—but can they deliver comparable performance?

The key difference between 704 and 705 is molecular structure. DC 704 is tetramethyl tetraphenyl trisiloxane (CAS 3982-82-9, MW 484), while DC 705 is pentaphenyl trimethyl trisiloxane (CAS 3390-61-2, MW 546). The additional phenyl group in 705 reduces vapor pressure from approximately 2×10⁻⁸ to 3×10⁻¹⁰ Torr, allowing a higher ultimate vacuum.

Core Parameter Comparison

Parameter DC 704 IOTA 704 DC 705 IOTA 705
CAS number 3982-82-9 Same 3390-61-2 Same
Molecular weight 484 484 546 546
Vapor pressure at 25°C 2.1×10⁻⁸ Torr 2×10⁻⁸ Torr 3×10⁻¹⁰ Torr 3×10⁻¹⁰ Torr
Ultimate vacuum, untrapped 10⁻⁷–10⁻⁸ Torr Same range 10⁻⁹–10⁻¹⁰ Torr Same range
Viscosity at 25°C 39 cSt 38±3 cSt 175 cSt 170–175 cSt
Flash point 221°C ≥210°C 243°C ≥243°C
Specific gravity 1.07 1.06–1.07 1.09 1.090–1.100

The remaining parameters include boiling point, boiler temperature, surface tension, heat of vaporization and refractive index. Dow provides more complete published data for boiling point, heat of vaporization and radiation resistance, while IOTA 705 additionally specifies a refractive index of 1.5765–1.5785 for purity and batch-control checks.

Can IOTA Replace DC 704/705?

The products share the same primary chemical identity, and their published vapor pressure, ultimate vacuum, viscosity and specific gravity are closely aligned. This gives IOTA 704/705 a technical basis for replacement evaluation.

However, the same CAS number does not automatically guarantee identical finished-product quality. Purity, moisture, light fractions, heavy residues, acidity, packaging cleanliness and batch consistency can still affect vacuum performance and service life.

The main differences are:

  • DC 704 has a higher stated flash point: 221°C versus IOTA’s minimum specification of 210°C.

  • Dow provides more extensive technical documentation.

  • Dow products may offer a five-year shelf life, compared with three years for IOTA.

  • IOTA generally offers shorter lead times and a lower purchasing cost.

For critical equipment, verify the COA and conduct a controlled trial before full replacement. Compare pump-down time, ultimate vacuum, backstreaming, oil colour and viscosity after continuous operation.

Conclusion: IOTA 704/705 can be evaluated as alternatives to DC 704/705, but reliable replacement requires the same chemical structure, controlled purity, consistent batches and successful equipment testing.
