“Imported Silicone Oil Only”? Local Alternatives Now Deliver the Same Performance at 30% Lower Cost
“Clients insist on Dow Corning or Wacker — they say domestic silicone oil isn’t good enough.”
This is a common response many local raw material suppliers hear.
Yet increasing formulation validation data shows that, in mainstream cosmetic applications, several high-purity domestic silicone oils now match the key performance parameters of imported brands — while offering 25–30% lower pricing and more than 60% shorter lead times.
The issue is often not whether it works, but whether someone is willing to try.
For the most widely used imported cosmetic silicone oils, mature and reliable domestic alternatives are already available:
-
Alternative to Dow Corning DC200 (100 cSt)
→ Domestic high-purity linear dimethyl silicone oil (100 cSt), light transmittance > 99.5%, D4/D5 < 50 ppm. Third-party GC-MS verification shows no significant difference in molecular weight distribution (PDI).
-
Alternative to Wacker AK100 (100 cSt, low cyclic content)
→ Domestic low-cyclic silicone oil (100 cSt), produced via deep devolatilization process. Total D4+D5 < 30 ppm, compliant with ECOSAR ecological safety assessment requirements. Suitable for premium creams and serums.
-
Alternative to Shin-Etsu KF-96 (350 cSt)
→ Domestic 350 cSt high-clarity silicone oil, acid value < 0.05 mg KOH/g, volatile content < 0.8% @150°C/3h. Already used stably in multiple domestic foundation formulations.
To support safe switching, we recommend a three-step compatibility validation approach:
-
Basic physical comparison: viscosity, refractive index, density, volatile content.
-
Formulation stability tests: accelerated aging (45°C × 30 days), freeze–thaw cycles, centrifugation separation.
-
Sensory & performance validation: blind testing panels evaluating spreadability, absorption feel, gloss, and other subjective metrics.
“We assisted a leading skincare brand in replacing DC200 with a domestic alternative. After six months of shelf-life monitoring, there were no changes in product stability or consumer repurchase rate — and the brand saved over 2 million RMB annually in raw material costs,” a technical service manager shared.
Today, high-purity domestic silicone oils commonly comply with ISO 22716 and pass REACH SVHC screening. Full compliance documentation packages (COA, SDS, non-animal testing declarations, etc.) are available to meet international brand audit requirements.
The “imported premium” halo is fading.
Rational selection is returning to performance and value.
