White Precipitation in Winter? The HLB Value Wasn’t Matched

“It’s the same batch of polyether silicone oil — it worked perfectly in summer. Why does it turn cloudy and form white flakes in winter?”

A dyeing and finishing mill encountered severe performance failure in low-temperature conditions. After investigation, the root cause was not product quality — but the failure to adjust the HLB (Hydrophilic–Lipophilic Balance) value according to seasonal temperature.

This is not an isolated case.

Polyether silicone oil is widely used in textiles as a softening, antistatic, and easy-care additive. Its performance depends heavily on compatibility with aqueous systems. The HLB value determines its hydrophilic–lipophilic balance, which directly impacts low-temperature stability.

HLB reflects the relative hydrophilicity of the polyether segments (EO/PO ratio) within the molecule.

  • HLB 8–10: More lipophilic. Suitable for summer or high-temperature processes. Lower cost, but prone to precipitation at low temperatures due to insufficient hydration capacity.

  • HLB 12–14: More hydrophilic. Forms stable hydrogen-bond networks with water. Maintains transparency and homogeneity even below 5°C. Ideal for winter use or cold-water finishing processes.

“Many customers focus only on the term ‘polyether silicone oil,’ overlooking that HLB is the true environmental compatibility parameter,” an application engineer explained. “We once helped a northern textile mill switch from HLB 9.5 to 13.2. The precipitation issue disappeared completely, and the fabric hand feel became more uniform.”

To prevent seasonal instability, we recommend establishing a dynamic selection strategy:

  • Winter (ambient temperature < 15°C): Choose HLB 12–14 with higher EO content to ensure low-temperature solubility and storage stability.

  • Summer (ambient temperature > 25°C): HLB 8–10 may be used to reduce cost and avoid excessive hydrophilicity that could increase drying energy consumption.

  • Year-round temperature-controlled workshops: Fix the HLB value based on process water temperature and regularly monitor working solution cloud point.

In addition, when purchasing, request the supplier to provide calculated or measured HLB values (via titration or NMR estimation methods), along with a stability report for a 5% aqueous solution stored at 5°C for 72 hours.

As a professional polyether silicone oil manufacturer, we offer seasonal-adapted product series and support customized HLB values based on regional climate and processing conditions — eliminating the “milky in winter, fine in summer” dilemma at the source.

A good auxiliary should not only perform well —
It should also adapt to temperature changes.
