“Affordable luxury” cosmetics are under fire. Xiaohongshu searches for #MakeupDupesFlop surged 130% week-over-week, as consumers report redness and irritation. Recent NMPA alerts cite heavy metal violations—traced to industrial silicones in “clean” formulas.
Unlike cosmetic-grade dimethicone or cyclopentasiloxane, industrial variants contain uncontrolled Pb, As, Hg, or Ni—sometimes exceeding limits by 5–10x. One tested “dupe” primer showed Ni at 45 ppm vs. the 5 ppm limit.
Legitimate cosmetic silicones must carry INCI names, ingredient submission codes, and COAs with actual metal values—not just “meets GB.” Brands skipping due diligence risk recalls and reputational damage. Safety, experts say, has no “budget version.”
