As CATL and BYD prepare Q2 solid-state battery vehicle trials, material specs tighten—especially for interfacial buffers. Unlike liquid cells, solid electrolytes (e.g., sulfides) suffer high interfacial resistance and crack under electrode expansion.
Silicone-based cushion layers absorb stress and maintain contact. But purity is non-negotiable: transition metals like Fe or Cu—even at 1 ppm—can degrade sulfide electrolytes. Leading developers now require <1 ppm total metals, with some pushing to 0.1 ppm.
Standard electronic-grade silicones (≤10 ppm) fall short. Suppliers must deploy advanced purification (molecular distillation + adsorption) and provide ICP-MS-certified batches. Compatibility testing under cycling conditions is essential. In solid-state, every atom counts.
